Vasectomy
A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure used for permanent contraception. During the procedure, both vas deferens (the tubes that carry sperm) are cut under local anesthesia, preventing sperm from reaching the ejaculate.
Key Facts:
- No effect on testosterone production
- No effect on sexual activity or libido
- Orgasm usually remains unchanged; the amount of ejaculate may be slightly reduced
Procedure Overview
- Initial Consultation:
Includes a physical examination, detailed discussion, and explanation of the procedure. - Vasectomy under local anesthesia:
Two small incisions are made in the scrotal area to access, cut, and tie off the vas deferens.
The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes. - Follow-up wound check:
1–2 weeks later at the practice. - Semen analysis (sperm count):
About 3 months after the procedure – important: additional contraception is required until then, as it takes time for the remaining sperm to clear from the system.
Aftercare:
Mild pain, swelling, or bruising may occur but can usually be well managed with painkillers and cold packs. The skin sutures dissolve on their own within 2–3 weeks. Most men recover quickly and resume normal activities after about one week.
Avoid intense physical activity, sports, sauna/hot baths, and swimming for about 1–2 weeks after the procedure.
Important Considerations:
Vasectomy is a permanent form of contraception.
It should only be performed if you are certain that you do not wish to have (more) children.
While reversal surgery (reconnecting the vas deferens) is possible, success rates are limited.
Vasectomy is considered an elective procedure and is therefore not covered by public health insurance. The initial consultation fee (€150) will be deducted toward the cost of the procedure.
During my specialist training, I was responsible for the pediatric urology outpatient clinic at the University Hospital St. Pölten and received surgical training in this field. Additionally, I spent several months at the department of paediatric urology at the Ordensklinikum in Linz, where I was able to further deepen my knowledge.
I offer you and your child consultations and treatment in a reassuring environment at the practice, addressing issues such as tight foreskin (phimosis), undescended testicles, bedwetting (nocturnal enusresis) or evaluation of recurrent urinary tract infections. I take the time to listen carefully and sensitively to your child’s concerns. Should specialized examinations or surgery be necessary, I will coordinate the next steps with you.
